According to the authors of the book, “bullying ranks high on the list of tremendous challenges facing kids.  This challenge has a great impact on their academic achievement, social interactions, and overall well-being”(Kevorkian, D’Antona).

Despite some people in the world who believe that bullying is not a huge deal and is almost nonexistent, “bullying is a reality!  Bullying is a reality that must be recognized and addressed.  Bullying and teasing are not simply a part of growing up”(Kevorkian, D’Antona).

It is something that “should not be tolerated or dismissed, especially when the’r consequences reach far beyond the classroom”(Kevorkian, D’Antona).

It has been reprted that “both boys and girls involve themselves in the unfair treatment of others.  Girls often tend to be hurtful and band together to isolate certain students”(Kevorkian, D’Antona).

The stereotypical bully is the big hulking boy who picks on everyone and takes their lunch money, but “bullying is not confined to the ‘class’ bully.  It can occur within a child’s circle of friends”(Kevorkian, D’Antona).

It ends with Edward almost killing her in an attempt to save her life from the danger of another vampire. 

Bullying occurs everywhere.  In every school all over the world, bullying occurs.  Every child has been exposed to some type of bullying, whether it was them who were the victims, the bullies, or a bystander.  This book basically gives you facts about bullying and how to deal with the aftermath of bullying.  The purpose of the book is to gain awareness of bullying and to help find a way to stop it.

Robin D’Antona is a certified national olweus bullying prevention trainer, president and executive director of the international bullying prevention association, and co-author of the comfort zone.

In the introduction of her book, the author writes “Bullying is a life-and-death issue that we ignore at our children’s peril.  It can no longer be minimized and trivialized by adults, taken lightly, brushed off, or denied”(Coloroso, XV).

It is not only the children getting bullied that suffers from long-term bullying, but instead “many children who bully continue these learned behaviors into adulthood and are at increased risk of bullying their own children, failing at interpersonal relationships, losing jobs, and ending up in jail”(Coloroso,XVi).

In order to “break the cycle of violence, it involves more than merely identifying and stopping the bully.  it requires that we examine why and how a child becomes a bully or a target of a bully”(Coloroso,XVi).

The author of the book writes “a deadly combination is a bully who gets what he wants from his target; a bullied child who is afraid to tell;bystanders who either watch, participate in the bullying, or looking away; and adults who discount bullying as teasing”(Coloroso,XVi).

Basically, “some victims whose cries went unheard, whose pain was ignored, whose pain was ignored, whose oppression went unabated and unrelieved, have struck back...other have turned the violence inwards and killed themselves”(Coloroso, XVi).

In the opening introduction, she cites references to about 15 different cases of where bullying spiraled out of control and ended in tragedy, such as deadly school shootings and suicide.  It gives it a sort of credibility because it kind of drives home her point that bullying is a cycle of violence that needs to be stopped and can’t be ignored any longer.

EX: I plan to use this source as a primary reference, and apply psychology to different quotes within the text, bringing out the ridiculousness of Bella's attachment to a vampire.

A new study indicates that “children involved in bullying are more likely than their peers to consider suicide by the time they are 11”(Dallas).

This study was “conducted by researchers from the University of Warwick in England and published in the March issue of the Journal of the American Academy Of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and found that children who were bullied over a long period of time were six times more likely to have suicidal thoughts than children that weren’t bullied”(Dallas).

In addition to the victims, “bullies were also at increased risk for self-harm and suicidal thoughts--even those who were never victimized themselves”(Dallas).

Researchers have to be sure to take “into account other factors, such as family circumstances or preexisting emotional problems”(Dallas).

Although researchers in the study “found an association between bullying and suicidal thoughts r self-harming behavior, however, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship”(Dallas).

EX: POV brings together information from a Cambridge conference in which professors of literature examine Twilight's effect on teenagers. Many of the sources cited talk about the negative affect on women that the books have had.  The writer then turns around and asks the reader to take a poll, which is noted as not being scientific, to see what the general populance thinks on this issue. 

Mary Elizabeth Dallas writes about how a study shows that bullying may raise risk of suicidal thoughts in both the victims of the bullies, and the bullies themselves.  They are more likely to consider taking their own life by the age of 11.  For the study, investigators analyze bullying among more than 6,000 children ranging in age from 4 to 10, and the prevalence of suicidal thoughts when the same children were 11 and 12.  Study co-author Dieter Wolke, a professor of psychology at Warwick Medical School says that health practitioners should be aware of the relationship between bullying and suicide, and should recognize the very real risks that may be evident earlier in development than commonly thought.

EX for Author: POV is simply a penname for an anonymous author. It stands for Point of View, and the majority of the articles written on the news cite are simply there to ask the opinion of the reader, and rehash someone else's research. 

EX for Site: CBC News is one of the main news associations in Canada, and the purpose seems to be to bring the news to the people. The articles are meant to inspire discussion, not so much force an opinion. 

Mary Elizabeth Dallas is a writer and is author to 90 individual articles on that website alone.  She is a news writer and producer with wide-ranging experience and a proven track record in television and online publishing.  Web experience includes news and feature articles as well as web content.  Areas of expertise include health, parenting, finance and economics.  She’s been a freelance writer now for the last 5 years.

EX: Other than keeping a job with the Canadian News, it seems the variety of articles displays a lack of attachment. 

No, it doesn’t seem that they have anything to gain from writing this article.  It’s simply informative.

Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing? 

EX: There is a slight bias in the fact that only the negative effects of Twilight are mentioned, not the positive. 

There is not really any bias.

References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility? 

EX: The author uses Cambridge professors in his/her argument, making it stronger, as they are professors of literature. 

The author references an ongoing study at Warwick Medical School, and she quotes on of the co-founders of the study who is also a professor at the school, and that gives credibility to the article.

Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project? 

EX: I plan to use this source to support my opinion that Twilight has a negative effect on teenagers, and also use it as a jumping off point for other sources, as it has a link to an MSNBC article about this issue.

I plan on using this source to support my opinion of some of the psychological effects of bullying.

Proposed Topic in the form of an  Essential Question:


What are the negative effects of bullying in schools, and what can they lead to if not properly confronted?

Rationale for Choice

What about this topic appeals to you? Why did you choose it?

The reason I chose this topic is because I have been bullied since the second grade.  I personally know how it feels to be bullied and the kind of psychological damage being bullied causes.

What do you already know about this subject?

I know the different types of bullying (cyberbullying, physical, verbal, emotional, mental).  I know some of the psychological effects that it introduces (self-image issues, self esteem).

What are you hoping to learn about the subject?

I want to get in depth about the types of problems that occur due to bullying, and I also want to learn about what people are trying to do to end bullying.

What are you most interested in regarding the topic?

I want to learn the why's of bullying, and to help resolve the problem itself.  Not only is it the victim who has to deal with it, but the bully is also most likely suffering from some problem that makes them bully to feel better about themselves.

                                                                                                                                                

What potential risks or challenges do you foresee for your project?

I don't really foresee any problems with my project.  There is plenty of research and studys that look in-depth of the problems that occur with bullying.
